Taking a Home Remodeling Show to the Next Level (with Hal Shaffer) | AHA
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast, hosted by Steve Stack! Today, Steve is joined by Hal Shaffer, the host of the Outdoor Channel’s home renovation show, Renovation Hunters. However, home improvement is not the only focus in Hal Shaffer’s, or the rest of the Renovation Hunters crew’s minds.
Yes, interior design trends, home decor, real estate development, and home building in general are all a major part of this whole operation. With that said, though, the crew of Renovation Hunters feels that the biggest contributor to their love of the show is their experience with the homeowners.
Every home project, big or small, is going to have road bumps along the way that turn a home makeover into a hassle. This never gets under their skin though, because they are motivated to come to their home town, and turn a fixer upper into a dream home for each and every family that they meet in this journey. It’s hard to be upset about roofing when you adore the people you’re doing it for.
Because of meeting a homeowner with ALS, Renovation Hunters partnered with the ALS Foundation, and is planning to take part in more charity work going forward. The people that the cast and crew meet along the way with this home improvement show are having a major impact, not just on the home design, but the show itself and how we are giving back to the community.

Manufactured Home Remodel on Renovation Hunters Season 2 | AHA
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! Today, AHA host Steve Stack talks with Chris Filardi, Managing Partner & Co-Creator of Renovation Hunters, on Outdoor Channel about the third project of Renovation Hunters Season 2, a manufactured home remodel project in Linesville, Pennsylvania.
This was an emotional project for the Renovations Hunters crew. The original homeowner, a husband and father, always dreamed of his family having a house on the lake. Tragically, he was diagnosed with ALS and passed away not long after retirement. This left the crew with the tall task of an old mobile home remodel honoring his memory.
The biggest hurdle for this project was the mobile home kitchen remodel. The original design of the kitchen was small and lacked a proper flow, making it difficult to cook for an entire family. So, the crew stripped the kitchen down to the mobile home walls and built it back up from scratch. Brand new kitchen cabinets and overall better storage space, countertops, sink/faucet, light fixtures, etc. all made a huge difference in the functionality of the kitchen space.
Dealing with the relatively small square foot size of the real estate typical of modular homes was not an easy task, but the crew was able to turn around the whole living space. They were even able to give the family’s grandma her own room with multiple access points, giving her privacy while maintaining easy access to the rest of the home.
The overall change was massive for the home improvement. The home look changed dramatically, transforming from an old, worn-out manufactured home into a high-quality place for a family to gather. This mobile home makeover was certainly a success for the Renovation Hunters crew. From the mobile home living room, new cabinets in the remodeled kitchen, paint colors, new flooring, etc., this project made the house look like a brand new mobile home.

Renovation Hunters Nonprofit Partnerships – ALS Association | AHA
Going into the third and final project of Renovation Hunters Season 2, AHA Host Steve Stack and Renovation Hunters Managing Partner & Co-Creator Chris Filardi knew that the father and husband of the family had passed away, which was the motivation for doing the project, but they didn’t know any details. After getting to know the family during the project, the Renovation Hunters team learned that he passed from ALS.
They took this opportunity to educate themselves on the disease so they could know how it affects people and their loved ones. The team reached out to the ALS Association, a nonprofit organization with initiatives dedicated to helping people diagnosed with ALS by fundraising for research efforts, to learn more and join the cause.
Moved by the stories of those affected by the illness, Renovation Hunters and the ALS Association created a corporate-nonprofit partnership that shares a common goal: raising awareness so we can one day find a cure.
Renovation Hunters is happy to work with this nonprofit partner and looks forward to the social impact and fundraising campaigns that can come of it. Being able to bring a new audience to the Association through Renovation Hunters advocacy is something that Baird Brothers and Renovation Hunters are proud to be a part of.
We believe it’s important for for-profit businesses to make connections in the nonprofit sector, particularly with organizations with shared goals. These types of partnerships allow for-profit companies to align to a cause greater than themselves and make a significant difference in the lives of many. By becoming corporate sponsors, offering financial support, in-kind donations, or even just helping spread awareness, being a corporate partner to a nonprofit can help make the world a better place.
Whether you raise awareness on social media, grantmaking, partake in volunteer opportunities, or another kind of partnership model, CEOs can make a difference by aligning their business with nonprofit organizations with shared goals. We encourage other businesses to seek potential partners and embrace their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Log Cabin Restoration on Renovation Hunters Season 2 | AHA
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor Podcast! Today, AHA host Steve Stack talks with Chris Filardi, Managing Partner & Co-Creator of Renovation Hunters on Outdoor Channel about the second project of Renovation Hunters Season 2, a log home restoration project in Baldwin, Michigan.
This log cabin proved to be a tall task for the team. Starting with an unassuming, 500 square foot (the first time working on a project this small!) log building, this log home restoration quickly became much more troublesome than they could have imagined. Winding up with much more than a simple log cabin restoration, much of the log house was completely demolished, leaving little more than the timber framing and studs of the log structure, even needing to completely remove one of the log walls on the lake side of the old cabin: log siding, chinking, and all.
This was an important project for the log homeowner, who was injured and unable to work on any restoration services himself. Aiming to make the log cabin livable so he can bring inner city youth who have never seen the great outdoors into the area, he could not let log cabin repairs stand in the way of the goal.
Between the addition of the porch to refinishing the entire interior of the cabin, this log home repair project made for a night and day difference.
Rotted logs, problems with sealants, water damage, and much more can prove troublesome when it comes to log home maintenance. Check out Renovation Hunters Season 2 to see how the team handles the hurdles of log home care!

Discussing Renovation Hunters Season 2 With Alex Roe | AHA
Home remodeling projects are a tall order, and require as much help as you can get. Luckily, the Renovation Hunters cast had a new addition for season 2. Alex Roe from A. Roe Taxidermy joined as a carpenter for this season’s three projects, and was a pivotal part of making some serious upgrades to these renovation projects.
In this episode of American Hardwood Advisor, Alex sits down with Steve Stack to discuss his experience with these home renovations. The fixer-uppers they worked on were not easy: between bathroom remodels, new countertops and light fixtures, new hardwood floors, a major kitchen remodel, redoing living rooms, tearing down drywall, and much more, these home improvement projects were like no other.
However, a home’s value is not just about functionality and high-end appearance: it’s also about what the home represents. The homeowners that the Renovation Hunters crew worked with this season understood that, and the stories of these families were big motivators for the crew. With the families with them, the crew put their heart and soul into each living space, dining room, home addition, and even smaller pieces like kitchen cabinets, sinks and faucets. All to give these incredible families their dream home.
The house renovation process is a long and hard one – especially when you have to tear a whole house down to the studs – but it is worth it when an amazing family gets to see their new home. That is the most rewarding part of giving a house a makeover.

Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this special episode, host Steve Stack is joined by Todd Joyce - with appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Joyce - to reminisce on the last year enjoying their freshly renovated rustic cabin, thanks to Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Steve and Todd discuss everything Renovation Hunters did to the rustic cabin interior (and exterior), enjoying nature, his family’s history with the previous homeowners and their rustic retreat. Renovation Hunters brought the family’s biggest log cabin interior design ideas to life! The week-long project renovated the log house interior design style by bringing in more natural materials, connecting the rustic log cabin to the outdoors.
The team at Renovation Hunters made the most out of the small cabin with elevated rustic decor ideas. They elevated the home decor, bringing new rustic kitchen ideas to the brand-new dining table (made of natural materials from Baird Brothers). They also provided solar power, a reliable water source, a luxury deer blind (that’s basically a cozy cabin itself), an outdoor shower, and even a skinning shed. The log cabin decor in the living area was just a start; the project also involved renovating the outdoor deck and including bedroom ideas to get the women of the family to stay for the night.
Renovation Hunters is a new series on Outdoor Channel where a team of craftsmen and expert DIY-ers come together to renovate log homes and cabin styles in need of some TLC. When the team visited Critz, the lakeside rustic-style cabin design was restored with some much-needed upgrades.

Hal Shaffer, Kevin Tarkovich & Chris Filardi on Renovation Hunters’ Project Tionesta | AHA
It’s another episode of American Hardwood Advisor! In this AHA, host Steve Stack is joined by the creative team behind the Outdoor Channel’s first renovation show, Renovation Hunters: Hal Shaffer, host and managing partner/co-creator; Kevin Tarkovich, lead contractor; and Chris Filardi, managing partner/co-creator. The team took time to reveal behind-the-scenes stories from Project Tionesta when they visited Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods in Canfield Ohio to tour the sawmill and Studio 3B.
Watch as Hal, Kevin, Chris and Steve reflect on the last project of the new series’ first season, updating an old cabin while honoring history, meeting the family that owned the Forest County getaway, meeting the people around the Tionesta area in western Pennsylvania, overcoming challenges, and all the ways Baird Brothers’ products transformed the cabin.
Renovation Hunters is a new TV show on the Outdoor Channel that takes a team of experienced DIY-ers and expert craftsmen across the country to renovate family getaway cabins. The home improvement team updates these properties to honor family history while preserving the home for generations.
The third Renovation Hunters project in season one of the TV show took the team to Tionesta, Pennsylvania, surrounded by Warren, Elk, Jefferson, Venango, and Clarion Counties. Far from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, the people who live in the Tionesta area fully embraced Renovation Hunters. One family even offered their own home for the renovation crew to use as a break and rest area!
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods was the provider of fine hardwood products used throughout the home improvement projects. Adding a natural resource throughout the interior design of the cabin helped immerse the getaway cabin in its environment.

Raechal Woodworks From the Renovation Hunters’ Tionesta Job Site | American Hardwood Advisor
Steve Stack is back with another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast, but not from Studio 3B! In this episode of AHA, Steve is on set at Renovation Hunters’ Project Tionesta talking with one of the makers, Raechal Petris (known as Raechal Woodworks).
Watch as Steve and Raechal discuss how tasks are split out on the job site for the Outdoor Channel’s first-ever renovation show, how she got her DIY woodworking start, and the benefits of working directly with Steve Stack from Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
The first season of the Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters took the team to three locations across the nation: Hyannis, Nebraska; Critz, Virginia; and Tionesta, Pennsylvania (located in Forest County near Allegheny). From Nebraska to western Pennsylvania, the team renovated family getaway cabins so that they could continue to use the cabin for generations.
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with the home improvement TV show as the provider of several natural hardwood products. The new series celebrates families getting together in outdoor spaces, so partnering with a family company that provides a natural resource just made sense!

Renovation Hunters’ Kevin Tarkovich on the Highest-Quality Wood Products | AHA
Welcome back to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, AHA host Steve Stack travels to Tioensta, Pennsylvania to visit the job site for Renovation Hunters’ third project of the first season and talk with Kevin Tarkovich, the lead contractor for Renovation Hunters. Watch as Kevin and Steve discuss the need for high-quality products, the wood products used on the show, how Baird Brothers stands out from other distributors and preserving the family traditions of the cabin.
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with Renovation Huntes to provide the new TV show with the highest quality hardwood lumber and building materials. Renovation Hunters is the Outdoor Channel’s first-ever home improvement show. In the series, remodelers visit three family cabins to renovate them for generations of family homeowners to come. The Tionesta project even features a new product exclusive to the show!
Baird Brothers is the go-to retailer for high-quality wood products like hardwood flooring, interior doors, shiplap, mouldings, millwork, stair treads, and more. Visit the showroom in Canfield, Ohio to see the species available (red oak, white oak, hickory, walnut, cherry, poplar, and more), prefinished options, coatings, sealers, wood stains and more.
Why choose hardwood flooring for your floor supply instead of flooring options like tile or laminate? Hardwood floors last for decades — and stay in style! If you want a different look, a good sanding and wood stain makes it feel like an entirely new floor.

Outdoor Enthusiast Hal Shaffer Talks Renovating Family Hunting Camps | American Hardwood Advisor
Welcome back to another episode of American Hardwood Advisor! In this podcast episode, AHA Host Steve Stack steps out from Studio 3B to travel to Tionesta, Pennsylvania, the home of Renovation Hunters’ final project of the first season. He steps away from the week-long tiny house remodel to talk with Hal Shaffer, host of Outdoor Channel’s Drop Zone and newest series Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Hal and Steve discuss the importance of families getting together, providing the perfect hunting cabin for a much-deserving family, renovating an off-grid cabin with no running water, Baird Brothers being a hands-on brand partner, remodeling hunting camps for generations of families, and enjoying the outdoors.
Hal Shaffer is the host and co-creator of Renovation Hunters, the Outdoor Channel’s first-ever renovation show. Being the outdoor enthusiast he is, Hal is already seen on the channel as the host of the hit show Drop Zone.
Renovation Hunters features woodworkers of different skill levels, from advanced DIY-ers to experts in carpentry, all working toward the same goal: providing a comfortable space for generations of family to spend time together and enjoy outdoor spaces (even if that meant altering the floor plan). The first season featured projects varying greatly in square feet, a renovated front porch, specialty organization for hunting gear, a log cabin that still utilized an outhouse, and families in need of a more comfortable log home to stay in during hunting season.
Baird Brothers’ involvement in the new tv series is evident with one step in the front door. In fact, Steve even visited the location in Tionesta before the project was selected to see first-hand the types of wood products that would look great in the small cabin. But it doesn’t stop there! Steve, along with some Baird family members, visited the job sites to share their woodworking know-how, showing how to install their products step-by-step.

Renovation Hunters Crew on Renovating a Historic Home in Hyannis | American Hardwood Advisor
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, host Steve Stack sits down with the creative team and lead contractor of Outdoor Channel’s new home remodeling show, Renovation Hunters. Hal Shaffer, host and managing partner/co-creator, Kevin Tarkovich, lead contractor, and Chris Filardi, managing partner/co-creator, talk with Steve during their visit to Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
Watch as Steve, Hal, Kevin and Chris discuss the first time they walked through the historic home, updating the living space for a future family, building materials from partners, and all that went into renovating a historic home. The Renovation Hunters team visited Baird Brothers to see the craftsmanship that went into the woodwork for the show’s interior design.
Renovation Hunters is the first home renovation show on the Outdoor Channel. In the new series, craftsmen and expert DIY-ers came together to makeover old homes for families to enjoy for generations. The first project for the show in Hyannis, Nebraska tested the team. “Fixer upper” was an understatement for this old house. The team had 8 days for a home improvement miracle: original windows needed replaced, drywall needed to be redone, and a burst water pipe led to water damage and an accidental ice rink in the kitchen, among other challenges.
Renovating old houses isn’t the only mission behind Renovation Hunters. It’s not about resale or real estate value; the team is passionate about providing comfortable homes that families can enjoy together and spend time outdoors. The older homes featured on the show are not everyday homes but are instead hunting cabins or vacation homes shared by families. For Project Hyannis, there were no homeowners. Instead, the town as a whole benefited from the new construction of the 19th-century historic house. The historic building was a center point of the town, but Renovation Hunters gave it new life.

Behind the Scenes on Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters in Hyannis, Nebraska | AHA
Welcome back to the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode of AHA, host Steve Stack is joined by Zach Baird, third-generation owner of Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods, as they reminisce over the first project on Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Stack and Zach provide a behind-the-scenes look at the first project in Hyannis, Nebraska. The pair talk about meeting the townspeople, the Renovation Hunters team and all the wildlife surrounding the Sandhills! While every project on Renovation Hunters provides a vacation home for generations of families to spend time together in outdoor spaces, the first project was a 118-year-old house on the tiny town’s main street.
The first season of Renovation Hunters visited small towns in America from Nebraska to western Pennsylvania. One step through the front door and Baird Brother’s impact on these projects is noticeable. Baird provided hardwood products, including lumber, kitchen fixtures and even DIY projects with added functionality to the home renovation series. However, Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods was more than just a sponsor. After a quick check-in, Zach and Stack got their hands dirty to help install their products and help the build wherever needed.
The time spent with family is priceless, whether you’re at a picnic area, hunting, or just sitting around in the family room — and both Baird Brothers and Renovation Hunters take that seriously. Hal Shaffer on Renovating Perfect Hunting Cabins for Families | American Hardwood Advisor
Welcome back to the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode of AHA, host Steve Stack welcomes Hal Shaffer, Host, Managing Partner and Co-Creator of Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters.
Watch as Hal and Steve chat about creating Renovation Hunters, renovating the perfect hunting cabin for families, being an outdoor enthusiast, the importance of family, the first time Hal picked up hunting gear, and how his career led him to Renovation Hunters — and then partnering with Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods!
Hal Shaffer is the host and co-creator of Outdoor Channel’s first-ever home renovation show, Renovation Hunters, but is no stranger to the network! Hal is already the host of Outdoor Channel favorite, Drop Zone! In this AHA episode, Hal tells the story that led him to success on television, from recording radio commercials and even being on a NASCAR pit crew!
The first season of Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters renovated log cabins and vacation homes of varying square feet on three job sites across the country. While Renovation Hunters didn’t build a hunting cabin from the studs up, each log home renovation made a huge difference for the family (some of which didn’t have running water and still utilized outhouses).
Renovation Hunters features crew members of varying woodworking know-how. The team is filled with bright personalities that range from carpentry experts to advanced DIY-ers. Despite their different backstories, they all have one thing in common: a passion for spending time with family and friends in the outdoors. Whether sitting on the front porch together or going out during hunting season, it’s important to spend time with loved ones out in nature.
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods partnered with Renovation Hunters to provide the interior hardwood products used in the projects. The new series is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who love incorporating natural resources into their interior design. One step in the front door, and you’ll see how Baird products impacted these tiny homes and small cabins. Steve Stack and Third-Generation Owner Zach Baird even visited the job sites to install the hardwood products step by step.
Have big hunting cabin plans that only Renovation Hunters can make a reality? Submit your own hunting cabin today! Visit outdoorchannel.com/renovationhunters to submit your off-grid cabin or hunting camp tiny house — as long as it’s not your primary residence! Renovation Hunters’ Co-Creator Chris Filardi on Successful Brand Partnerships | AHA
Welcome to another episode of the American Hardwood Advisor podcast! In this episode, host Steve Stack welcomes Chris Filardi, Managing Partner and Co-Creator of Renovation Hunters, to Studio 3B.
Watch as Chris and Steve talk about his background in construction, successful brand partnerships, finding sponsorships for a new TV show, meeting and partnering with Outdoor Channel veteran Hal Shaffer, tapping into a new market for the network, and the projects featured on the first season of Renovation Hunters.
The Outdoor Channel’s Renovation Hunters traveled to three locations across the country to renovate family hunting cabins, including Hyannis, Nebraska; Critz, Virginia; and Tionesta, Pennsylvania. Contestants submitted their small cabin fixer-uppers for a makeover on the home renovation show.
As Chris explains in this AHA episode, brand collaborations were a major consideration when creating the home improvement show. They wanted brand partners that shared their values and mission — enter Baird Brothers! As a third-generation family business that enjoys hunting together, Baird Brothers was thrilled to sponsor a show that helps families get their dream home away from home to spend time together and get outdoors. One step in the front door of these hunting cabins, and you’ll see the impact Baird Brothers products had on the project. The natural hardwood products elevated the interior design while honoring the nature surrounding it. Steve Stack and Third Generation Owner Zach Baird were on site to install the new products, too!
The creators didn’t stop their marketing efforts with a brand strategy for company partnerships. They actively searched for influencers and makers with a similar target audience. With this strategic marketing campaign in mind, they joined forces with woodworkers of all levels, from experienced craftsmen to makers and DIY-ers. All the makers featured on the show have their own following so that the show could reach a new audience within their target demographic. Along with getting their hands dirty on-site at the projects, the makers naturally helped with outreach and public relations to their individual audiences.
Renovation Hunters and Outdoor Channel coming together was a strategic partnership. Chris explains that the Outdoor Channel’s audience is already filled with handymen and women. So, why not tap into a new market with a home renovation show? The target audience is already there as loyal customers, so why not tailor to more of their interests?

Wall Control provided the woodworking tool organization for The Outdoor Channel’s latest renovation show hosted by Hal Shaffer. With the level of remodeling done in the cabin (and at such an accelerated pace), proper organization was a must. Wall Control designed the storage truck that held cordless tools, miter saws, table saws, routers, hand tools, and everything else needed for the project.
